1. 14/1/83  Bankura.  Loco no 5 is seen on Bankura shed being prepared for the afternoon train. The line was once part of the McLeod & Co group, taken over by the SER in 1967. The 0-6-4T type was the standard power for their lines along with the Delta class. The loco wears a modified SER livery along with the builder's name prominently displayed on the buffer beam. Incredibly these engines were later replaced by even older CC class pacifics built at the turn of the century.
2. 15/1/83 Ranchi. A late afternoon visit to the depot was timed to see the engines for the evening freight working being prepared.
BS class 618 is being hand coaled by labourers.

3. 16/1/83  Ranchi. An overcast morning with smoke in the air as BS 639 leaves on the passenger working. The depot coal yard can be seen on the left with the CC class pilot awaiting attention. The broad gauge lines are to the right with narrow gauge cross overs to the freight yard.
4. 17/1/83. WG 8461 departs Ranchi passing an Italian built steam crane, a similar crane was based on the narrow gauge shed.

5. 18/1/83.  Raipur. XD 22343 and WP 7319 are on the stabling point. The WP had earlier arrived on the Link express from Waltair and the XD was used as a pilot. The main line was of course electrified.
6. 18/1/83. The narrow gauge with its allocation of CC class pacifics was the main attraction for me at Raipur. In the afternoon I rode out as far as Bhatgaon where the photo shows CC 683 awaiting the cross. The loco carries an unusual SER crimson lake livery. I had a large crowd of followers who were amazed to see a photographer, some of the young men wanted to act out a scene as "Tiger-men" from some local movie which was a hit for them!

7. 19/1/83.  My token diesel shot! A WDM1 seen at Gondia, relegated to local freight work between Nagpur and Durg.
8. 19/1/83.  Gondia. ZE44 seen on arrival from Jabalpur on the Satpura express. The train had been introduced in May 1976, note the older SER livery carried by this engine.
