Hal Hughes’ family page

Like many railwaymen Hal came from a family with a long tradition of service in India.

Click on the family tree and you will see details that Hal has traced and the connection with the NWR.

Hal’s grandfather, Carmen Paul Hughes joined the NWR as a fireman in November 1876, he gained rapid promotion to driver in June 1879 and went on to become  Shed Foreman (Loco) at Lahore in July 1898, until his retirement in March 1912. His pay shows he was receiving an additional allowance that was paid by the NWR to British people born outside of India. Following his retirement the family settled in Saharanpur.

The images below show Carmen and his family, his NWR certificates of service and from the V.O.Waters’ collection, photos of locomotives that Carmen would have been familiar with in his time on the NWR.
