INTRODUCTION

I am going to deny myself and not stack these pages full of shots of Central Railway WPs, however the C.R. crews were giving these engines their final burst of glory on express trains. The WPs in this zone were generally in excellent external condition and most were in good mechanical condition, their crews seemed inspired to put in some good performances and farewell their engines in style!

1. 31/12/82.  WG 8447 runs into Khandwa Jn. on the overnight parcels turn from Bhusaval to Bhopal. I had seen this train at Bhusaval the previous night waiting for my own train with its WP to run ahead of it. The WG is in passenger link livery, note the metre gauge YG and stock in the background.
2. 1/1/83.  I had spent the day viewing the remarkable temples at Saanchi, on the Bhopal - Bina line. I rode out and back to Bhopal on the Sabarmati Expresses, the return working is seen arriving at Saanchi behind WG 8487.

3. 2/1/83 WP 7128 on 35 Bina Express is held at a loop not far out of Bhopal to let another express overtake. I stood with the engine and the train crew who were most unimpressed by the delay.  Then we heard the sounds of urgent whistling, not the expected diesel horn! I raced up the platform and tried to get into position as the sounds of an engine working hard and fast were heard. The WP topped the grade and then hurtled through the station, the train was a late running Madras - Delhi Janata express. I had left my camera set to 250th a second shutter speed, sadly too slow for this fast mover; so be content with the peaceful stillness of 7128.
4. 3/1/83 Gwaliior. The ex Scindia State Railway was still using steam locos on all its trains in 1983. The unusual ND class Hudsons (4-6-4) were a large engine for the two foot gauge. No 747 (built in 1928) was cumbersome, like a Jumbo, but did the job. It is seen leaving on the afternoon pass to Sheopur Kalan, note the non-standard coaches.

5. 3/1/83. The NM class pacifics were much smaller than the ND class, but were superheated when built in 1931.
NM 760 is seen arriving on the morning pass from Bhind.
6. 4/1/83  The NH/2 class mikados (2-8-2) were built in 1922, used for both passenger and freight work, they were my favourite type on this system. NH/2 750 is seen ready to leave the shed for its next duty.

7. 4/1/83  WP 7024 pulls into Dholphur on the Madras - Delhi Janata express. I crammed into the front carriage and used my rucksack as a doorway seat. This was a fantastic ride to Agra with the crew whipping their WP along at speeds of 50-55+ m.p.h. The sparks were flying from the chimney and the whistle in constant use as we charged along, uncomfortable..yes; but what a brilliant experience!

Check out the next lot of photos: Agra - Calcutta .

check back later this year (by Nov.2001) for a fresh set of pictures on this site
